The Northern Alliance

 • Military wing of Afghanistan's pre-Taliban government, which is still recognized by most countries and the United Nations.

 • It is believed to have between 10,000-12,000 troops, supported by a limited number of Soviet-era tanks, fighter jets and helicopter gunships.

 • Military leader Ahmed Shah Massoud, a veteran commander in the 1979-1989 war against Soviet occupation, was assassinated September 9. Massoud's intelligence chief, Gen. Mohammed Fahim, is now the alliance's temporary defense chief.

 • The Northern Alliance is believed to receive support from Iran and Russia, which are opposed to the Taliban
